Guide Previous: The Project
In addition to the course work required to
fulfil the formal requirements of the course, the Department requires each
student to participate in a number of workshops and seminars. These are
designed to help students obtain skills of use in completion of your project
and to round out your postgraduate experience.
Appendix A contains a summary of the dates, times
and locations for these events.
All documents prepared for your project
requirements must be prepared using a word processing system that produces
portable Postscript output. One option is to use LaTeX on the Departmental Unix
systems. The tutorial will cover the procedures required to use LaTeX and give
an overview of the most common commands. Arrangements for this tutorial can be
made through the Honours supervisor.
Throughout the year, the Department
organises an assortment of seminars, usually on research topics. The aim is to
have a seminar each week, although this does not always happen. Speakers vary
from lecturers or post-graduate students from this department, to visitors from
other institutions.
All Honours and MappSc students are
required to attend as many departmental seminars as possible given scheduling
constraints. You will find that watching other people
speak will give you valuable pointers for your own seminars, plus you can often
learn about areas of computer science to which you may otherwise not be exposed.
Presenting your work in front of other
people can be a daunting experience. Nevertheless, an important goal of the
course is to give you the confidence and experience to describe complex ideas
and problem solutions to a general audience. To this end, you are required to
present one or two seminars as part of your course. To help you prepare for these seminars an
informal workshop will be held. The idea of this workshop is to present some
general do's and don'ts about seminar presentation and allow you to ask any
questions you have about preparation, techniques, etc. Seminar
